During the franchise's initial TV broadcast run in Japan from 1986 up through 1997, Toei Animation simultaneously produced 17 theatrical films for the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z TV series. These movies served primarily as stand-alone productions for Toei's seasonal theatrical events, rarely directly tying in with their respective TV series' current story line.
Between then and the movie's release on 30 March 2013, a second full-length trailer and numerous TV commercial spots were released. Along with confirmation of the movie's official title, an advance collaborative ticket for "Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods" and "One Piece Film Z", which premiered 15 December 2012, was announced.
The first set, "Dragon Ball Z Season 1", was released on December 31, 2013, and the final set, "Dragon Ball Z Season 9", was released on December 9, 2014. The episodes are presented in the cropped 16:9 widescreen format.
